The Washington Monument is an iconic US landmark located on
the National Mall. The monument pays tribute to the first President of the
United States, George Washington. It is just over 555' tall. The
monument stands due east of the Reflecting Pool and the Lincoln Memorial. The
monument was damaged during the Virginia earthquake of August 23, 2011 and Hurricane
Irene in the same year; as of 2013
it remains closed to the public while the structure is assessed and repaired.
The National Park Service estimates the monument will be closed until 2014.
I have taken pictures of the monument in August 2008 and December 2013
and shown for comparison with the scaffoldings for repair work.
