When the Freer
Gallery opened to the public in 1923, it became the Smithsonian’s first art
museum. Founder Charles Lang Freer (1854-1919) was a Detroit businessman who
began collecting American Art in the 1880s, before turning his attention
East. The Museum boasts outstanding holdings of works from China, Egypt,
Japan, Korea, South and Southeast Asia and the Islamic world. It also has a
renowned collection of American Art, including Whistler’s Peacock Room.
